Abstract: The article includes an attempt to understand the category of “federation”, to define it, and its elements taking their transformation in the modern world into account. The federation is analyzed as a form of political and territorial structure of the state, the specific features of the Russian model are analyzed. The institution of federation should be used to develop the Russian state, rather than using Russia as training grounds for the formation of an ideal federative model, which in turn makes this article topical.
