On the Development of the Image of the Caucasian Mineral Water in the First Half of the XIXth Century: the Continuity of Style
// Culture and Art.

DOI: 10.7256/2454-0625.2018.10.27440 URL: https://en.nbpublish.com/library_read_article.php?id=27440
Abstract:
The subject of the research is the architecture of the Caucasian Mineral Water in the first half of the XIXth century. The aim of the research is to discover peculiarities of its evolution and development of a particular visual image. To achieve this purpose, the author analyzed the cultural policy of the state towards early Russian resorts that paid much attention to the development of the city and landscape environment. In particular, Pyatigorsk was an experimental city because it served as the capital of the North Caucasus. Pyatigorsk played the role of a certain reference model all the local resorts should try to catch up with. Thus, their architectural stylistics presented the big empire capital. The researcher also analyzes specific interaction between actors of the cultural policy at different levels: emperor, governor, chief executives, and artistic elite. The research methodology implies the historical cultural approach in terms of the province-capital dichotomy and discovering stylistic transformations in the architecture of the Water under the influence of varied social, military, political and economic factors. The use of archival data, epistolary heritage, and memoiristics allowed to extend the concept of the process. The scientific and practical importance of the research is caused by the fact that Semina analyzes the interaction mechanisms between actors of different levels under severe conditions (Caucasian War, mountaineers raids, absence of stable transport connection) that created the phenomenon of the rural architecture of the Caucasian Mineral Water. The result of the urban development was the synthesis of rigorous classicistic forms and Romantic style. This was also the time when the unique image of resorts developed as the reflection of the syncretic connection to both capital and European culture.

The subject of the research is the English country houses designed by such architects as Richard Horman Shaw, William Eden Nesfield, and Gilbert Scott. The researcher also focuses on the books of John Ruskin The Stones of Venice and The Seven Lamps of Architecture and their influence on the development of particular aesthetic preferences. Sokolova performs a detailed formal stylistic analysis of the frontal composition and architectural decor of English country houses in the aforesaid epoch. Despite a common belief, masters of the British Gothic Revival were not inspired only by the images of the national architecture. Thaks largely to John Ruskin's writing that has become so popular lately, the interest of architects shifts towards the medieval heritage of other European countries including Italy.

The Concept of the Resurrection in Sergey Rachmaninov's Romance Poetics
// Culture and Art.

DOI: 10.7256/2454-0625.2018.10.27592 URL: https://en.nbpublish.com/library_read_article.php?id=27592
Abstract:
The article is devoted to the graphical and musical realisation of the Resurrection concept in Sergey Rachmaninov's small performance lyrics and other compositions. Being one of the basic Orthodox concepts of a great spiritual and cultural importance, the Resurrection concept was practiced by the composer by the means of various genres which once again proved the historical and genetic affinity of the two branches of Russian musical culture (church and secular) and complementarity of their ideals and values. Thus, the methodological principle selected by the author is aimed at discovering the composer's artistic devices that convey the spiritual message of the secular composition. As a result of the analysis, the author discovers that Rachmaninov used different approaches to the realisation of the Resurrection concept in his religious compositions that expressed the cathedral praise of the divine event, and secular compositions that described the expressive romantic and tragic concept of the Russian Temple's death. At the saime time, the analysis of the concept in his small performance lyrics (based on the example of the romances 'Christ is Risen!' and 'The Raising of Lazarus') demonstrates that the theme is quite similar in compositions of both kinds, not only at the level of emotions and meanings but also at the level of music and text.

Artistic Reality in Guzel Yakhina's Novel 'My Children'
// Culture and Art.
2018. № 10.
P. 79-87.
DOI: 10.7256/2454-0625.2018.10.26710 URL: https://en.nbpublish.com/library_read_article.php?id=26710
Abstract:
According to a number of critics, in her new novel Guzel Yakhina did not manage to naturally combine different artistic narrations and themes. Rozin analyzes the criticism and arguments based on his own concept of artistici reality. He demonstrates that the new novel of Guzel Yakhina is not traditional in terms of its narration. The writer used the method of artistic poetics that Rozin believes to belong to the phenomenological approach. The peculiar feature of the phenomenological approach is the description and expression of the reality outside the artist and performance of a complex subject content of the consciousness. For this regard, the author discusses the challenges that may be faced by the reader who tries to understand such artistic reality. Rozin has used the following methods: problem statement, comparative analysis, reconstruction of Guzel Yakhina's creative writing, positioning in polemics and axiological analysis. As a result of his research, Rozin demonstrates that it is necessary to differentiate between two different means of construction of the literary reality, wherein phenomenological discourse and aesthetics are very different from traditional ones. Even though the phenomenological approach provides new opportunities, it has certain drawbacks, too, especially in terms of understanding and thinking logic.
