Samovich, Y.V. Sexual violence as means to conduct armed activities: ensuring security of women in armed conflicts.

Abstract: Up to the end of XX century sexual violence was regarded as a usual part of war, and it was a subject of any specific study. While, the military and historical documents showed sexual violence in the armed conflicts, at the same time these facts had never been put into the spotlight of publicity. This led to the specific attitude to sexual violence in the armed conflict. It was not regarded as crime and did not fall within the scope of “military crimes”. Y.V. Samovich’s article is devoted to the study of this problem since the time of the 2nd World War to the present time, including the conflict in Iraq, as well as to international legal sources on the issue.
